What Makes a Suede Shearling Jacket Worth the Investment?

A suede shearling jacket pairs a genuine suede shell with a dense sheepskin lining, real fur, not synthetic pile. Ours runs 1.0mm suede over the shell with a full sheepskin interior. This isn't a fall jacket with a fur collar bolted on. It's built for sub-freezing mornings.

A wool coat blocks wind. This jacket blocks wind and holds body heat against the skin.

Craftsmanship & Material Breakdown

Suede Type & Origin

The shell is goat suede, thicker than our other four styles at 1.0mm, because it has to support the weight of a full shearling lining without sagging at the shoulders over time. The collar turns back to show the sheepskin. A direct descendant of the B3 bomber flown by WWII pilots at altitude, where temperatures dropped well below zero in unpressurized cockpits.

The shearling itself is genuine sheepskin, tanned with the wool intact. It's not faux fur stitched to a lining. The wool grows directly from the hide that lines the jacket's interior.

Hardware & Lining Specs

A heavy-gauge YKK zip runs the front, backed by a wind flap with snap closures. A feature pulled straight from flight jacket history, designed to seal out cold air at altitude. Two hand-warmer pockets sit lined in the same sheepskin as the body. The cuffs and hem show visible wool, both functional and a visual signature of the style.

Fit & Sizing Guidance

This jacket runs roomier than our other suede styles by design. The shearling lining adds bulk that the cut has to accommodate.

  • Wearing over a t-shirt or thin layer: true to size
  • Planning heavy winter layering underneath: consider sizing up
  • Want a closer, less bulky silhouette: size down one, expect a snugger fit through the shearling

How to Style the Suede Shearling Jacket

Cold-Weather Casual Look: Dark denim, work boots, a chunky knit underneath. The shearling collar does the visual heavy lifting. It keeps the rest of the outfit simple and rugged.

Smart Cold-Weather Look: Over a flannel or Henley with tailored wool trousers and leather boots. The sheepskin collar reads elevated rather than purely functional when paired with more structured pieces below.

How Do You Care for a Suede Shearling Jacket?

Brush the suede shell regularly, separate from the wool lining. Never use the same brush on both. The wool needs occasional fluffing with your fingers to prevent matting, especially at the collar where it makes the most contact. Professional cleaning is recommended over home care for this style; the combination of suede and intact wool is harder to treat safely at home than single-material pieces.

Curious whether the suede shell on a piece this heavy actually holds up over years of winter wear? We answer that directly: Is suede leather durable? (Blog-05).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a suede shearling jacket actually warm enough for winter?

Yes. The combination of a suede shell and genuine sheepskin lining provides significantly more insulation than a standard leather or suede jacket, comparable to a heavy wool coat.

What's the difference between shearling and faux shearling?

Genuine shearling is sheepskin tanned with the wool still attached to the hide. Faux shearling is synthetic fleece, which traps less warmth and doesn't develop the same texture or longevity over time.

Can a machine wash a suede shearling jacket?

No. Machine washing will destroy both the suede shell and the wool lining. Professional cleaning is the only safe option for stains beyond surface dust.

Why is a suede shearling jacket more expensive than other suede styles?

The genuine sheepskin lining adds significant material and labor costs compared to a poplin or viscose lining, and the thicker shell suede needed to support that weight raises material costs further.
